NEW MEXICO

Motorcycles were first mentioned in 1910 city ordinances in Albuquerque, Las Vegas and Sante Fe, and the Raton ordinance of 1911.  It is assumed that these were still in force even after the first state automobile law was passed in 1912, as this law makes no reference to motorcycles.  The first state law to specifically require registration of motorcycles was 1913 Chapter 19, passed on March 11, 1913, which killed off all city plates.  This also brought about the first state-issued motorcycle plate series, dated 1913; plate #261 is the highest example known.  After that, plates were issued on a calendar-year basis.  The highest 1914 motorcycle plate known is #179, the final number issued that year.
